With Monster Hunter: Wilds just four weeks away, players are already excited over what CAPCOM’s highly anticipated action RPG has in store. One discovery, in particular, has sent the community into a frenzy — an uncanny pattern found on the skin of the game’s newly revealed monsters.

Reddit user u/quinnchar posted on the Monster Hunter subreddit and noticed that several new creatures — Rey Dau, Uth Duna, and the recently named Nu Udra — share a strikingly similar skin pattern. This observation quickly ignited speculation on the r/MonsterHunter subreddit, with fans debating whether these monsters belong to the same species or are offshoots of an even more ferocious and terrifying Elder Dragon. (They could be cousins or something.)

This isn’t the first case of wild speculation among Monster Hunter: Wilds fans. The game’s biology and ecology appear stranger with each new monster revealed. Take Nu Udra, for example — a cephalopod seemingly pulled straight from a Lovecraftian nightmare. It slithers across the map using its many tentacles and can coat itself in deadly fire. Fans noticed that once its oily sheen dissipates, its exposed skin reveals a distinctive pattern that appears repeatedly throughout Wilds’ ecological design.

Rey Dau, a Flying Wyvern with a railgun-like appendage on its head, has a similar pattern on its wings. Uth Duna, the Apex of the Scarlet Forest, eerily shares the same design on its fins and scales.

But the mystery doesn’t stop there. The discovery has spread across X (formerly Twitter), where players have found the same patterns embedded throughout the game’s world.

Eagle-eyed fans even zoomed in on the Monster Hunter: Wilds logo and found the same intricate design. Others pointed out that the spiky lightning pylons scattered across the Windward Plains also bear the same markings.

Of course, this does not guarantee anything significant—these could simply be artistic coincidences. However, the consistency of the pattern has convinced many that something bigger is at play.

Some fans believe that if the next revealed Apex monster features the same skin pattern, it will all but confirm a connection to the game’s overarching theme and ecology. It could even tie into Wildsfinal boss. More details are expected during CAPCOM’s special Monster Hunter: Wilds spotlight next week. Who knows? We might spot even more of these patterns when the second open beta launches in just a few days.
