Sonic the Hedgehog’s icon status continues to shine thanks to his third movie and recent games doing well. Now, it seems that SEGA and Sonic Team are willing to take more risks with the character, as a job listing has hinted at a new fighting game with the fastest thing alive. There aren’t a lot of fighting games focused on the character, so this is a really interesting move.

Games Cage posted the job listing on X, highlighting how Sonic Team is working on a “3D Battle Action Game.” While the term “3D Battle Action Game” is pretty vague, many are assuming this is going to be a new fighting game with the SEGA icon’s colorful cast. It’s too early to assume anything will be made from this, but it should be interesting.

Fans familiar with the history and lore of Sonic will know that he’s had a few fighting games in the past. Anyone who bought a SEGA Saturn will remember how fun and broken Sonic the Fighters was. It might not be the most popular game out there, but it did get re-released as one of the games in the Sonic Gems Collection.

While not as fondly remembered, Sonic Battle on Game Boy Advance also has its fair share of fans. Considering the hardware it was released for, many view this as a perfectly competent handheld fighter for the time. Now, it’s a bit awkward to play, but fans might see some charm in playing an arena fighter on the GBA.

New fighting games are always worth talking about and it will be interesting to see what Sonic Team does with this. The FGC is always looking for something new to talk about, so a wild project like this will be pretty cool. Hopefully, this is something we get to see in the future since it’s a crazy enough idea to do the work.

That’s everything we know about this potential Sonic fighting game. For more on Sonic, read about some of the cut content from his third movie.
