At long last, Capcom has answered the call of Onimusha fans with the upcoming remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, arriving in 2025. When Onimusha 2 hit the PS2 in 2002, it quickly became one of the series' most beloved entries, thanks to its action-packed combat, rich story, and memorable characters. After waiting for what feels like forever, players can now jump back into this classic with updated visuals and easier access on various platforms.
This remaster is just another step in Capcom bringing the classic Onimusha franchise back. Although Onimusha: Warlords got a remaster in 2019, it appeared the sequels would stay locked on older systems. After years of silence, Capcom is breathing new life into Onimusha 2 with its first proper remaster.
The remaster brings upgraded graphics, but aside from that, there won’t be any major gameplay adjustments or added content. For those unfamiliar with Onimusha 2, the game develops the concepts from the first title. The story tracks the path of a new hero, Jubei, as he faces off against supernatural threats in feudal Japan.
One of the key features of the game is its "hub" system, where players can interact with side characters and shape the direction of the story based on their choices. The game's multiple branching paths and endings also made it highly replayable, giving it an edge over other action games at the time. The remaster will drop on PS4, Xbox One, and Switch, with backward compatibility for PS5 and Xbox Series X, so players on newer consoles can join in too.
Unfortunately, next-gen consoles won’t have their own dedicated release, which might disappoint fans hoping for a full next-gen experience. However, Onimusha fans have even more to look forward to, as the Onimusha 2 remaster is just the beginning of what’s to come. On top of that, Capcom has confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be released in 2026, marking the first new one in over two decades.
