Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been the best-selling Switch game for its whole life, but seeing it continue to sell so well is surreal. To think that this was just a simple Wii U port with new features Nintendo barely advertised during their then-new console’s reveal. One imagines that the company wants Mario Kart 9 to sell even more for the Switch’s successor.
X user Knoebel shared the best-selling first party games of Nintendo’s Switch, showing just how much this console benefitted these franchises. While it shouldn’t have been a surprise, fans were shocked to see how the eighth Mario Kart continues to dominate sales, now selling an incredible 67.35 million copies.
What makes this kind of funny is how much Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has outsold its original console, the Wii U. Nintendo rightfully considers that console a failure, as it only sold 13.56 million copies. Knowing that a port of this dead console’s racing game has sold more than four times its entire life sales is kind of embarrassing.
To be fair, Nintendo has made sure that this Deluxe version would be a bestseller for their new system. It’s often bundled with various Switch models for Black Friday sales, ensuring that newer fans will pick this up alongside their new console. On the rare occasions that Nintendo puts their games on sale, this kart racer is usually one of them.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was so successful that Nintendo ended up making more DLC for it via the Booster Course Pass. This added 48 new tracks to the game, some of which came from Mario Kart Tour, and 8 additional characters to use. Naturally, a physical version bundled with the DLC was also sold and that probably added to the sales.
Now that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has outsold the Wii U even more, all eyes are on Mario Kart 9. With the Switch 2 getting a bigger reveal in April,
