PlatinumGames has quietly removed any mention of Project G.G from its website. This has sparked speculation about the fate of the superhero game. Hideki Kamiya first teased Project G.G. in 2020, aiming to cap off his superhero trilogy that started with Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101.
The game promised to feature a larger-than-life protagonist taking on giant enemies, a concept that piqued the interest of fans looking forward to Kamiya's trademark action gameplay. However, in late 2023, Kamiya made the unexpected decision to leave PlatinumGames and form his own studio, Clovers. The studio is currently working on an Okami sequel with Capcom.
Fans couldn’t help but wonder what the future holds for Project G.G. After Kamiya’s exit, there’s been little to no update on the game, and the recent disappearance of Project G.G. from Platinum’s official site has caused rumors to swirl that the project may have been canceled without fanfare.
The developer has wiped out all references to the game, and the old URL is now redirected to the homepage. This change also brought down titles like Star Fox Zero, Babylon’s Fall, and World of Demons from the site. While most of these titles were tied to underperformance or licensing issues, the absence of Project G.G. is hard to ignore, especially given all the hype around it.
The decision to take Project G.G. off the website has been heavily criticized by ex-Platinum staff. Jean Pierre Kellams, a former producer at the company, openly said it was “extremely regrettable” that PlatinumGames decided to scrub its history. He described the removal as a major slap in the face, especially after all the work and enthusiasm invested in the projects that are no longer on the site.
As things stand, PlatinumGames hasn’t shared any official statement about the future of Project G.G. Some fans think the game could still be in works behind the scenes, but it’s starting to look like it’s been shelved for good. Kamiya himself, in a December interview with VGC, hinted at his regret over not being able to complete Project G.G., comparing it to his previous canceled project, Scalebound.
With no leadership in place since his departure, it seems unlikely the game will progress as planned. It’s a big move right now, especially since PlatinumGames is focusing on projects like Ninja Gaiden 4 with Team Ninja.
The studio remains active in the gaming world, thanks to titles like Astral Chain and Bayonetta 3 continuing to make waves, but pulling Project G.G. from their slate suggests they’re focusing on projects with better commercial promise or that are already in progress.
The big question for fans now is whether Platinum will keep diving into new IPs or play it safe with the classics for the future.
