Saying goodbye is never easy, especially when it means losing something you've enjoyed for quite some time. As dramatic as it may sound, this was the fate that befell Warner Bros.' Smash-like fighting game, MultiVersus.

However, fans are still holding onto hope that the game will somehow make a return in the future, even as its servers prepare to shut down on May 30.

Tony Huynh, co-founder of Player First Games and Game Director of MultiVersus, shared a heartfelt farewell message to both the fans and the game itself. In his lengthy post, he reflected on PFG’s missteps and addressed the challenges that plagued the game's troubled development.

In another post, a fan shared a short AMV on X (formerly Twitter), compiling the game’s cutscenes as a tribute to its imminent closure. Tony responded by quoting the Tweet, simply saying, “This made me cry.”

Following his emotional posts, fans flooded Tony with questions. One asked whether it was already too late or if they were just hoping in vain. Tony replied that the team had worked tirelessly to serve the players, but concluded with, “Thank you for hoping. I can’t say if it will matter in the end, but I also hope.”

The replies to the Tweet were filled with messages of support for both MultiVersus and its game director. Some fans even launched a petition to revive the game and preserve its dedicated community.

MultiVersus’ shutdown is part of Warner Bros.' broader struggles in gaming, particularly following the financial failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which reportedly resulted in losses of around $200 million.

As of May 30, MultiVersus is officially shutting down, disappearing from storefronts including Steam, PlayStation Network, Epic Games, and Xbox. Warner Bros. has already begun the process by disabling purchases of Gleamium, the game’s in-game currency.

The last characters added to the game were Aquaman and Lola Bunny, a final update that Tony expressed pride in.

For now, MultiVersus’ loyal fanbase continues to grieve its unfortunate shutdown. But perhaps, in time, there’s hope for a better iteration of the game in the future.
