While some Pokemon fans are no doubt still busy debating the views that the company behind the beloved creature collection games might have about nuzlocke playthroughs, some have seemingly already moved on to other talking points.

One of these fresh discussions surrounds a recent discovery made by one superfan on LinkedIn, which has incited a fair bit of speculation.

The tidbit at the centre of this chatter comes from a developer’s profile on the professional social media website that seems to suggest that the long-awaited sequel to Detective Pikachu is nearing release.

Are you eagerly anticipating the chance to solve more crimes with Pikachu?

As spotted by famiboards user MetalLord, the experience section of the LinkedIn profile of Jonathan Murphy, a Senior Game Programmer at Creatures Inc and Pokémon TCG’s Development Division, says of his duties in his current position: “Using Unity/C# (coding languages), worked on one unannounced project and one nearing release, Detective Pikachu 2.”

Naturally, it’s the latter of these two projects that’s got some of the Pokemon community overflowing with anticipation that 2016’s Detective Pikachu might be due a sequel soon, with famiboards user Hero of Legend suggesting: “[The] Switch supports [Unreal Engine 5], but it's just wild that we could see some kind of Pokémon project on it, and I'd figure Detective Pikachu 2 would be a very prime candidate for it, especially if they wanted to take some cues/inspiration from the movie.”

Said movie was also a topic of conversation once the speculation made its way over to the subreddit r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, with user Frequent-Cap4953 saying: “(I’m) unironically disappointed this wasn't referring to a movie sequel” and Able_Contribution407 adding: “What an unexpected good time that movie was.”

On the other hand, user just_looking_4695 expressed relief to have finally seen or heard something about the game, saying: “it's so weird how this game was announced for Switch in 2019 and there's been like zero official mention of it since.”
