Pokémon GO features a ton of useful items that you can utilize to become the very best. However, for a lot of these items, attempting to stock up on them will cost you a pretty penny. Or more specifically, a pretty sizeable amount of PokéCoins.

PokéCoins are a premium in-game currency that players can spend in the Pokémon GO shop. As such, you can purchase them with real-life money, however, there is also a method of earning PokéCoins for free. Here is how you can get PokéCoins in Pokémon GO.

Taking over and defending gyms

Currently, placing your Pokémon to defend a gym with the same colour as your team is the only reliable way for you to get PokéCoins for free in Pokémon GO. If this gym belongs to a different team's colour, you must first take over it by defeating the Pokémon defending it.

As your Pokémon successfully defends the gym, you'll earn 1 PokéCoin every ten minutes, with a limit of 50 PokéCoins earned daily. Furthermore, you can even expedite this process by placing your Pokémon across a maximum of 20 different gyms.

It is important to note, however, that players will only get the PokéCoins their Pokémon has accumulated once it's defeated and kicked out of the gym. So if more than one Pokémon with 50 PokéCoin is kicked out on the same day, you'll lose out on all the coins that exceed your daily limit.

Purchasing PokéCoins

This is the primary way through which you can get PokéCoins in Pokémon GO. There are no limits involved here (except maybe on your wallets). Here's how much real-life money different amounts of PokéCoins will cost you.

  • 100 PokéCoins -$0.99/ £0.79
  • 550 PokéCoins - $4.99/ £4.99
  • 1,200 PokéCoins - $9.99/ £9.99
  • 2,500 PokéCoins - $19.99/ £19.99
  • 5,200 PokéCoins - $39.99/ £38.99
  • 14,500 PokéCoins - $99.99/ £99.99
