SEGA made waves during last year’s Game Awards when they announced new installments of their classic IPs, including Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio. It seems that the company has another big IP in the works, as rumours claim they’re making a game based on Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The folks at Insider Gaming were able to confirm that Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the new titles they will be working on as part of this IP revival. Aside from this anime adaptation, the company is also reportedly working on new installments of Panzer Dragoon and Sakura Wars.

During the days of the SEGA Saturn, the company did make a couple of Evangelion games, though they were exclusive to Japan and played like visual novels. While that is still a genre with its fair share of fans, we do hope that this rumoured installment is something a bit more interesting.

For the most part, Neon Genesis Evangelion hasn’t done much in the video game space, outside of some collaboration events in mobile games. Occasionally, we see some of the character costumes become DLC for certain games, but the anime just doesn’t lend itself to video games.

Anyone familiar with the source material knows that it’s a fairly depressing piece of work that shows how messed up it is to have kids fighting in wars. While playing around in mechs and shooting stuff is fun, as games like Armored Core show, Evangelion is about how it’s messed up. Maybe SEGA will have to stick with the visual novel genre but we’re willing to see what the devs are planning to do with this IP.

Beyond Neon Genesis Evangelion, we also mentioned a new Panzer Dragoon remake and another entry in the Sakura Wars series. That’s quite a lineup from SEGA and that’s not even including the previously announced titles during The Game Awards. More games will be announced soon and we hope one of them is Skies of Arcadia.
