Video game movies used to be the butt of the joke when it came to the box office, but ever since Sonic the Hedgehog, adaptations have been bringing in the money.
With Sonic the Hedgehog 3 coming out over the holidays, the film has been steadily making bank at the box office, and now it’s marked a major milestone for star Keanu Reeves.
Sonic 3 is One of Keanu Reeves’ Highest-Grossing Movies
As pointed out by @TheCartoonBase, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has become the sixth high-grossing movie in Keanu Reeves’ filmography. Looking at the numbers, the highest-grossing movies of Reeves’ career include:
- The Matrix Revolutions ($427 million)
- John Wick: Chapter 4 ($440 million)
- The Matrix ($465 million)
- The Matrix Reloaded ($738 million)
- Toy Story 4 ($1.07 billion)
Other films on the list that Sonic 3 could surpass include John Wick: Chapter 3, Speed, and Something’s Gotta Give.
Shadow’s Not Done Yet
At the time of writing this article, Sonic 3 had already earned $339 million at the worldwide box office. That’s still shy of how much the previous movie made; Sonic 2 earned $405 million during its run.
That said, Sonic 3 still hasn’t finished its box office run, and at the rate the movie is going, it’s possible that it could still earn more than $400 million and maybe even surpass it in the next few weeks.
Though Reeves wasn’t part of Sonic 2, the post-credits scene of Sonic 3 did tease that Shadow survived the ordeal with the older Robotnik, and it’s possible that he could show up at some point in the future. In the meantime, the franchise is now gearing up for Sonic’s clash with Metal Sonic, an antagonist introduced years before Shadow was even a thing.
What to Expect with Sonic 4
Based on the mid-credits scene, it will look like Sonic will face one of his most iconic villains in the franchise, Metal Sonic. While Shadow still has a heart and an emotional core, Metal Sonic, created by Robotnik, is the opposite of Sonic.
Though he can move just as fast, Metal Sonic is a cold and unfeeling machine, and where Sonic’s heart should be, Metal Sonic just has an empty hole.
Admittedly, the movie has made some changes with Metal Sonic for the film canon. While only one MS in the games frequently clashes with Sonic, the movies have introduced an entire army of robotic Sonics—but the catch is that they’re pretty easy to take out. Some fans speculate that a Metal Sonic Prime is hiding somewhere, but that reveal is still being held off for a future movie.
With the introduction of Amy Rose, Sonic’s family just continues to grow onscreen. I am curious if the films are ready to introduce Rouge the Bat, who is no doubt the catalyst for many a furry on the internet.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is now showing in theatres.
