Star Fox Switch: Leaks, Rumours, News, and Everything We Know

Star Fox is often considered an iconic series for Nintendo fans. First appearing in 1993 on SNES, this 3D rail shooter focused on the adventures of Fox McCloud, defending Corneria against Andross' forces with his team, Star Fox. Using a Super FX coprocessor to implement 3D graphics, it was widely lauded. Since then, we've seen numerous entries appear across the N64, GameCube, DS and Wii U, but many fans have wondered whether we'll see a Switch version.

Like most Nintendo franchises, there's been frequent speculation that a new entry's coming. We're not sure if the next Nintendo Direct presentation will offer news, but if it does, here's everything we know so far.

PlatinumGames Doesn't Know If Star Fox Zero Will Be Ported To Switch - Considering the Switch has seen many ports of first-party Wii U games, speculation has often arisen to whether 2016's Star Fox Zero could get the same treatment. Speaking to GameXplain during an interview, Atsushi Inaba of PlatinumGames stated they had no idea if this would happen, confirming:

To be honest we wouldn't have the slightest clue, Star Fox Zero was a bit of a special case for us. Star Fox was, you know, an IP that Nintendo has had way before we entered the picture. That was a game that they were interested in making and kind of just lent out an offer to us "hey, would you like to kind of work on this with us".
As far as the future of any ports or whatever, maybe concern, no conversations have come our way. I don't think it's something we would be involved in, to be honest.

Star Fox Switch - Rumours

Two years ago, rumours circulated that Nintendo were planning a Star Fox racing game called "Star Fox: Grand Prix", with a reveal incoming at the next Nintendo Direct. If true, this would've followed one of Star Fox Command's nine endings - none of which are confirmed canon - where Fox and Falco turn their Arwings into racing machines.

That came from Vergeben, a leaker that correctly predicted Super Smash Bros Ultimate would include Inciniroar/Ken, stating Retro Studios were developing this. However, that reveal never materialised and it's been two years since anything's popped up, likely meaning this was either false or that the project's been cancelled.

Starlink: Battle For Atlas

Back in 2018, Ubisoft's continued collaborations with Nintendo - having previously released Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle - saw a crossover through Starlink: Battle for Atlas, a toys-to-life action-adventure game set across the Atlas Star System.

For the Switch version, that gave us playable figures for Fox McCloud and his Arwing. While this doesn't replicate Star Fox's signature gameplay, this saw Fox assisting the Starlink characters, joined by Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad. However, there is an exclusive mission to hunt down Wolf O'Donnell.

New missions were later added as DLC, which saw players chasing down's Star Wolf's lieutenants - Andrew Oikonny, Pigma Dengar, and Leon Powalski - after completing the main Star Fox story missions.

Are Other Star Fox Games On Switch?

Yes. through the Nintendo Switch Online service, which offers a regular slate of NES/SNES games as a subscription perk. That includes the original Star Fox game and Star Fox 2, a SNES sequel which was basically completed but went unreleased for two decades.

After Nintendo formally released it through the SNES Mini in 2017, they brought Star Fox 2 to Nintendo Switch Online two years later. Star Fox 64/Lylat Wars, the N64 entry, is also available for Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscribers.
