The tide has turned on Starfield, as fans who were once excited to explore space are now bored by Bethesda’s sci-fi-themed RPG. Despite most gamers saying this is a bad game, it managed to beat Starfield in terms of sheer gameplay hours, which is saying a lot.
Based on the official stats of both games (via Game Infinitus), BG3 has “only” been played for 452,556,984 while the Bethesda RPG has a total of 534,823,944 hours. If we get technicalities out of the way, these are still a ridiculous amount of numbers to spend on a game so both companies should be proud.
With all that being said, how can a game like Starfield gain these many hours if fans currently hate it and consider exploring space boring? As it turns out, the stats also reveal that most gamers spent 40 hours in the game, which means they at least went through the campaign and didn’t bother with New Game Plus.
Another reason why Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG might have a ton of numbers is likely due to Xbox Game Pass. Most Xbox users have Game Pass, so they technically got the game for “free” since it's a part of the subscription service. We wouldn’t be surprised if most fans gave the RPG a shot, due to all the hype surrounding it.
Originally, Bethesda fans were incredibly excited to give Starfield a shot, since Skyrim in space sounded like a dream. However, after spending extensive hours on the game, it seems that this sci-fi exploration sim doesn’t have the gameplay chops or narrative that Skyrim has.
Just in case it needed to be said, Baldur’s Gate 3 is probably the more quality game when you consider the amount of effort and content put into it. Every choice matters, there are hundreds of endings to get, and you can romance most characters, it’s a great RPG.
