For those who’ve invested thousands of hours into the likes of Skyrim and Fallout 4, the release of Starfield, which is now pencilled in for September 6, can’t come soon enough.
Regardless of what you want to see from the next showcase of Bethesda's venture into space or how many interstellar mods you plan to install once it arrives, the idea of being able to delve into a freshly curated game has RPG lovers of all stripes intrigued.
Recently, a few of the fans who’ve spent the last few months speculating and worrying about the seemingly sex-free game, have been trying to come up with a suitable nickname for its protagonist, with some rather out-there ideas having been put forth.
What do you think Starfield’s main character will be referred to as?
These moniker-based musings form the subject of a recent thread on the Starfield subreddit, which began with a post from user apexanimo, who kicked things off by asking: “How will (Bethesda) name (the) player character/main protagonist?”
A bunch of their fellow would-be astronauts were quick to spew forth a range of potential suggestions for aliases just as catchy as the likes of ‘the Dragonborn’ and ‘the Courier’, with user fags343 nominating: “The Cartographer”, while TheWaslijn opted for: “The Captain” and ChromaticDilation chose: “The Spacefarer”.
On the other hand, user RyeRoen responded to the latter: “(That’s) probably too generic. If you imagine NPCs talking about ‘The Spacefarer’, it doesn't seem specific enough since there will be a lot of spacefarers. I'm guessing it will be artefact-related or something. Like ‘The Seer’ or ‘The Knower’, but I don't really like those (to be honest).”
Meanwhile, user Ser_Optimus proposed: “I still hold onto my theory that the game starts with the discovery of a fully intact artefact that we, clumsy as we are, break. We are then sent on a journey to find all pieces and repair the thing before the universe ends. Thus the main protagonist will be called (the) Butterfingers.”
Some equally bizarre and amusing ideas came from the likes of user LeglessN1nja, who volunteered; “(The) Novakiin”, DJ_Laaal, who submitted: “(The) Starborn” and Borfeus, who possibly alluded to a previous debate on the subreddit by declaring: “John Starfield, titular character of the upcoming space RPG ‘Starfield’.”
