Starfield fans think they’ve found evidence of an autopilot setting in its uber-detailed spaceship interiors

Most of the hardcore Bethesda RPG fans who’ve invested thousands of hours into Skyrim and Fallout 4 can't wait for the release of Starfield, which we now know won’t be too close to the arrival of Fallout London.

These would-be interstellar explorers got plenty of fresh answers regarding what to expect from their trip to space at this month’s Starfield Direct, which featured everything from detailed data about some of its planets, to the Adoring Fan and even some surprisingly valuable sandwiches.

While some have since been researching which versions of it come with a physical disc, or listening to PlayStation’s CEO give his views on its exclusivity, one has decided to examine the consoles of the game's spacecraft incredibly thoroughly, coming to some rather interesting conclusions.

Do you think Starfield’s spaceships need an autopilot function?

The eagle-eyed explorer in question, user OkPain2022, has shared their findings via a post to the subreddit r/starfield, having revealed: “After watching the (Starfield) direct a good hundred times, I had the idea to examine the dashboards of all the ships that the player takes control of in the video.”

This process led them to discover that pretty much all of the ship consoles that they examined display the text "Auto FLT: OFF" somewhere in their array of screens, which OkPain2022 speculates could be an indicator that their autopilot systems are disabled, leading them to infer that it could be possible for the player to turn it on.

While some of their fellow spacers agreed with this conclusion, others remained sceptical, with some arguing that the text is far too small to be the sole way for players to tell whether such an important feature is enabled and suggesting that it could simply be a decorative touch.

Given that another fan previously spotted that at least one of the ships shown in the deep dive also comes with a rage quit button on its dashboard, these would-be astronauts could well be right to have held off on starting to plan out what they’re going to get up to with their crew while their ship happily motors along with on one at the controls.

Meanwhile, based on how many features of the game’s UI display, such as hull condition and target lock-on, are replicated in the consoles OkPain2022 also hypothesised: “I imagine it will probably be possible to deactivate the HUD and play in simulation mode (without missing out on any information).”
