Valve’s Steam Deck is an incredible piece of hardware, so imagine our surprise when we found out someone transformed their handheld into a screen-less and controller-less Steam Brick. What makes this discovery even more shocking is that the modder supposedly did this because the handheld PC didn't fit their backpack.
Originally reported by PC Gamer, a user going by Crastinator-Pro posted on GitHub about how he turned his Valve console into a computer brick. According to the gamer, they “modded” the system because it wouldn’t fit in their backpack and was usually a pain to bring around. While a bigger bag would have sufficed, they went full bore and removed everything functional about it.
"The Steam Deck has been a game changer for travel," Crastinator-Pro wrote. "But I found myself leaving it behind more often than not, as it wouldn't fit in my backpack, took up a huge amount of carry-on space, and was a hassle to bring down from the overhead compartment when I wanted to use it."
Somehow, the modder was able to remove this PC handheld’s screen and buttons, but keep everything else to make it a working Steam Brick. It can still connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices, among other things, making this a miracle. Honestly, the fact that it’s not just a broken piece of junk is astounding.
Amazingly, this user can still play on this supposed Steam Brick. Based on their results in the post, they can still play games by docking the Brick to a TV or connecting it to AR Glasses. We obviously wouldn’t advise anyone else do it, but the fact that they got it to work in the first place is a miracle.
Personally, we would stick with a Steam Deck, especially with the gorgeous new OLED version readily available for purchase. That doesn’t take away from the Steam Brick being a cool thing that exists though.
