After years of fan demand and months of leaks, the Nintendo Switch 2 is officially coming out this year. Pretty much every leak about the console has been proven true, from the magnetic joy-cons to backwards-compatibility with games. If that wasn’t enough to excite fans, a Direct for the console was also announced for April.

Many leakers correctly predicted that the new system would be revealed today, with Nintendo sharing a new trailer showing off the console. This is going to be a much bigger system than the original Switch, with bigger joy-cons, though we don’t know yet if they will be hall effect.

Luckily, this Switch 2 trailer confirms backwards-compatibility in a big way. Not only does the trailer show Mario Kart 8 Deluxe being played, but a handy graph at the end shows that even physical games will work on this system. So players with thousands of Switch games have nothing to worry about, since they can still play all of them.

No new games for the system were announced, but the trailer does end by teasing a Nintendo Direct for this brand-new console. Details on the new system will be revealed on April 2, 2025. That’s a few months away, but fans can wait happily knowing that this new system is very much real.

Stay tuned for more Switch 2 news.
