As GTA 6's Fall 2025 release draws closer, one question still stands: will it be available on PC?
While the game has officially been confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, PC players have yet to get an official confirmation. During a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick shared some insights into Rockstar's platform plans and hinted that a PC version might be in the works. Zelnick discussed the long-standing approach that Rockstar Games has taken with its major titles.
Historically, the studio has rolled out games on specific platforms first, typically focusing on consoles before expanding to PC. This trend traces back to the GTA series, with both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 following a console-first strategy. According to Zelnick, GTA 6 will follow the usual route: consoles first, with a PC version possibly coming down the line.
"We don't always go across all platforms simultaneously," he said. This strategy isn't exactly new, but it has left some fans frustrated, especially since many were hoping for a simultaneous PC release, considering how important the platform is today. With PC gaming on the rise, accounting for nearly 40% of sales for many multi-platform titles, it's clear that PC gamers are an important audience for any blockbuster release.
Even with all that, Zelnick pointed out that Rockstar isn't rushing to meet these GTA 6 demands. The game is expected to be released in the Fall of 2025, but if history repeats itself, the PC version may not arrive until 2026 or later. Zelnick also mentioned there are obvious signs that Take-Two is shifting its approach to gaming platforms.
He pointed to other major titles, such as Civilization 7, which will be released on consoles, PC, and the Switch right away. This is a bit of a change for them, but he pointed out that GTA 6 still won't be using that model. Rockstar is now focusing on the console market to boost hardware sales, especially with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S having seen sluggish sales in recent months.
Many are still unsure if this decision will hurt GTA 6's sales. Even though the console-exclusive launch could alienate a few PC gamers, GTA 6 is still expected to give console sales a major lift. Zelnick is confident that the game will boost PS5 and Xbox Series X|S sales while also helping the overall gaming market thrive.
GTA has always had a hand in driving console sales, and Zelnick is betting that GTA 6 will follow that pattern. Considering the game's huge scope and the excitement surrounding it, a PC release a year after the console drop would still be a notable event, albeit with a smaller audience than if it had launched on all platforms at once.
GTA 6 not having a confirmed PC release date might be a letdown for some, but Zelnick's comments show Rockstar's approach is far from an anomaly. The company has typically rolled out releases in phases, and with PC gaming becoming more relevant, it's very likely that GTA 6 will eventually arrive there—though not just yet. Fans will need to wait, but as Zelnick mentioned, it could be worth the wait.
