While many Last of Us fans are still enjoying replaying the first game in the series on the PS5, others have seemingly already moved on to trying to predict what Naughty Dog’s next project could look like.
This goal previously led some to conclude that the studio could be planning a fantasy title based on some artwork included in The Last of Us Part 1, though, as discussed at this year’s Summer Game Fest showcase, such a new IP will have to queue up behind a multiplayer Last of Us game.
What is up for debate is the exact model that this multiplayer game will follow, with a new vacancy at Naughty Dog leading some fans to believe it’ll be free-to-play.
What do you want from The Last of Us multiplayer?
The vacancy in question is for Live Ops Producer, who will join the studio to work on a “major new multiplayer title”, with the ideal candidate being described as “someone with a deep understanding of the complexities of live game operations and a track record of building processes to help the team achieve their highest potential.”
Though, the main detail which has fans talking comes from the ‘bonus skills’ section of the description, which lists “proven experience in a production role supporting a AAA, free to play, live title” as a desirable qualification for candidates to possess.
This has sparked a thread within the subreddit r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, which has seen some users suggest that they think going with a free-to-play model for the game is definitely a good idea, with dowaller66 claiming: “Can a multiplayer-only title even survive if it’s not free-to-play? I think the days of premium multiplayer-only games are long gone.”
However, user StarbuckTheDeer disputed this, citing the likes of Sea of Thieves, Dead By Daylight and The Elder Scrolls Online as successful examples of the latter.
Meanwhile a few players were more interested in debating whether the game will feature Ellie flossing as a post-kill celebration or Joel hitting the griddy.
Regardless of whether you think these Fortnite-esque inclusions would be in good taste, make sure to follow us for more coverage of The Last of Us.
