Mystery solved. The super secret Nintendo Playtest Program is an MMO of sorts and it sounds super ambitious.
Almost immediately after the playtest went live, information about it leaked online. User Ethan_ThisGuy shared some images of the project. They were confirmed true since they were taken down from Twitter due to copyright infringement.
Essentially, the program is designed to test mass multiplayer functionality and gameplay, with a focus on collaborative world-building for this particular case.
In other words, Nintendo is trying to see if the Nintendo Switch can handle running an MMO of sorts. Participants have to work together to create a vast planet using resources and creativity, with gameplay centered around "Beacons."
The beacons emit healing light and purify land for development. Players have personal "Beacon Zones" where they can build and store items, while public areas are shared and editable by all.
Key mechanics include earning Dev Points and Connex Points for progress and social interaction, which can be used to level up and obtain items. There is also a central social hub, the Dev Core, for gathering, leveling up, and acquiring supplies.
Another big feature of the project is user-generated content (UGC), allowing players to create and share content. Additional elements include a Development Positioning System (DPS) for tracking progress and players, a spectate function for distant viewing, and reporting tools for maintaining a safe environment.
Of course, it's unclear if this is a project they intend to release to the public. As I said previously, it's most likely a proof of concept to see what can the Nintendo Switch handle.
Who knows, they might be working on testing the capabilities of the inevitable Switch 2, which should be announced sooner rather than later. Right? In any case, It'll be interesting to see what all of this will lead
