It’s been quite some time since Game of Thrones ended on HBO, and while fans are still waiting for the next season of House of the Dragon, Netmarble is going to bring fans back to the world of Westeros, with their upcoming title, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad.

New trailers for the game have just been released. They feature familiar characters and some gameplay mechanics.

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad

The official trailer for Game of Thrones: Kingsroad has dropped. While there are some glimpses of gameplay, the trailer seems more focused on bringing back fan-favorite characters like Jon Snow, Lord Varys, and star-crossed lovers Jaime and Cersei Lannister.

Here’s the official logline: “In Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, you will embark on a journey to restore your house’s legacy, forging alliances through trials and betrayals while navigating a realm rife with intrigue, danger, and opportunity… The game’s original storyline expands on that of the legendary TV series, allowing you to forge your own path amidst the power struggles of noble houses and the looming threat of what lies beyond the Wall.”

By the looks of it, the game is not going to be in the official canon, but events will take place around the War of the Five Kings, meaning that Jon Snow is already a Brother on the Wall, and Cersei Lannister currently holds power in King’s Landing.

The main character looks to be an original player-insert who is said to be a Northerner looking to reclaim the honor of his house. If Thrones has a stereotype about people from the North, it’s that they’re tough as nails, and they really have this thing about honor.

Gameplay Sneak Peek

As far as gameplay goes, it does look like Kingsroad is going to be drawing a lot of inspiration from The Witcher. Besides the fighting, players will also have a world of jobs to take and environmental puzzles to solve.

According to ComingSoon, Kingsroad will have three classes to choose from: Sellsword, Knight, and Assassin. Sellswords are more of a tank class, and they make good use of two-handed axes; Knights are considered to be the most balanced class, wielding longswords in battle and using a ‘sophisticated fighting style’; and Assassins move fast and are handy with daggers during combat, they can also throw their knives for a ranged attack.

It’s still unclear how open the world of the game is going to be, but it does seem like players will be encouraged to jump around and do some tasks around the map, whether it be solving puzzles or taking up jobs on the town bulletin.

Canon Fodder

Though the game won’t be adhering to the official canon, it does open the world up for some more interesting stories with well-known characters. It’s unclear what the plan is for Kingsroad in the long-term, but Netmarble definitely has a lot of room to grow, given just how expansive the world of Westeros can get.

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad has no release date yet, but it is expected to launch for PC, Android, and iOS sometime later this year. The Close Beta Test will run from Jan. 16-22; players can sign up until Jan. 12.
