Following CD Projekt Red’s decision to suddenly announce a massive assortment of upcoming titles, including several new Witcher games and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, earlier this month, players have been wondering what some of the codenamed projects mentioned might turn out to be.
One such project was dubbed ‘Canis Majoris’, with the only details on it revealed in that original barrage of announcements being that it involved The Witcher and was being developed by a third-party studio.
However, thanks to another surprise reveal from CDPR, we now know that said project is a remake of the game that kicked off Geralt of Rivia’s rise to the top of the gaming medium.
Are you excited to jump back into the first Witcher game?
As outlined in a blog post on CDPR’s website, Canis Majoris is set to be a remake of 2007’s The Witcher, which will utilise Unreal Engine 5 to bring the game up to more modern standards comparable to its massively popular sequels.
Developed by Polish studio Fool’s Theory, which has previously worked on games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and is home to some developers who’ve worked on the Witcher series before, the remake will still be receiving “full creative supervision” from CDPR.
In the post, CDPR Studio Head Adam Badowski said: “The Witcher is where it all started for us, for Cd Projekt Red. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger.”
Badowski also adds regarding the decision to work with Fool’s Theory: “They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games.”
