Sony made a controversial decision last year when they limited access to their PC games, requiring PSN accounts for titles like Helldivers 2 and God of War: Ragnarok. While sales for PlayStation games on PC have been consistent, the fact that these titles aren’t available in over 100 countries has been controversial. It seems that Sony is considering lifting these requirements, with fans noticing some interesting developments on SteamDB.
Fans on the Gaming Leaks subreddit have noticed some activity on SteamDB that has various countries showing up on PlayStation games. Although nothing has been made official, fans are hoping that this means Sony is lifting the PSN requirements needed to play these games on PC. Gamers should take this with a grain of salt since Sony does really love those requirements, but it does seem like something is happening.
Helldivers 2 was the first Sony game to force PSN requirements, making it unplayable in over a hundred countries. Customers in other countries did get refunds but fans would have preferred it if they could keep their games. PSN requirements have now become the norm for other Sony games, with Ghost of Tsushima, God of War: Ragnarok, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered.
It will be interesting to see if this leads to these PSN requirements getting pulled. Fans in these countries have complained constantly about not being able to play these games. Realistically, they can just buy a PlayStation 5 and play it with a different country’s PSN account, but limiting purchase options like these should be condemned.
Let’s hope this leads to Sony making an official announcement about lifting PSN requirements. Until that happens, players should take this with a grain of salt. It would be a real shame if these don’t get lifted, especially with titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 coming to PC soon.
