Given CD Projekt Red’s sudden announcements of a massive assortment of upcoming titles, including an Unreal Engine 5 remake of the first Witcher game, and the imminent arrival of The Witcher 3’s next-gen update, fans have plenty of reason to jump back into the series right now.
For those doing just that on PC, mods can provide a number of interesting ways to spice up the experience, such as allowing you to truly appreciate the beauty of The Continent from a distance or get an idea of what Geralt might look like if he joined ZZ Top or went clothes shopping in Night City.
A new mod is also perfect for those currently preparing to embark on a new playthrough of The Witcher 3 to celebrate its next-gen update, giving you the opportunity to create a bit of a different Geralt build by providing the monsters he’ll be slaying with some more interesting mutagens.
Get ready to spend a lot of time tinkering around in Geralt’s character menu
The mod in question is called ‘Unique Mutagens Overhaul’ and is the work of a group of modders led by donutman0610, whose previous work has given Lambert and Eskel unique swords and added quests to the game’s DLC armour sets.
This time, they’ve decided to delve into the abilities bequeathed to Geralt via his participation in the trial of the grasses and ensure that the mutagens he’ll pick up as he stabs and slices his way through The Witcher 3’s enemies with be worth all of that past discomfort.
The mod does this by revamping the boons granted by these mutagens, with most creatures, from Alghouls to Wyvern, now dropping one with an effect that better fits their abilities in combat, rather than a generic stat boost.
For instance, if you pick up a mutagen from Grave Hag with the mod installed, you’ll be able to improve Geralt’s tolerance of toxic potion effects, something which seems to apt for a monster that often hangs around disease-ridden cemeteries than the vitality boost offered by the vanilla game’s version of the mutagen.
'Also, all of these revamped mutagens can still be combined with the more generic ones not associated with monsters to create more powerful mutagens and are fully integrated with the lab in Corvo Bianco's cellar, where they can be dismantled into lesser mutagens.
The mod will also work with new game plus playthroughs, meaning that you can use it even if you were planning on starting one of those when you delve into the definitive Witcher 3 experience on December 14.
