Very little is known about Monolith’s Wonder Woman video game, but a new job listing seemingly confirms live-service elements for the superhero title. This comes not long after Warner Bros. declared that they were going to make live-service games out of all their major IPs, so no surprises here.
Warner Bros. posted a job listing for Lead Software Engineer, where it states that the DC superhero title will include the Nemesis system from the Middle Earth titles. Unfortunately, a quick look at the job listing’s “Nice to Have” section says “Experience helping maintain a live software product or game,” which screams live-service to us.
Making a single-player game like Wonder Woman have live-service elements sounds pretty counterproductive, but Warner Bros. and Monolith did this already. Gamers will remember how Middle Earth: Shadow of War actually had a lot of microtransactions, before being removed a year later.
Unfortunately, this seems to be a growing trend with WB games, as the company really wants to make as much money as possible. Mortal Kombat 1, a game that already has DLC characters and various special editions, is charging fans real-life money for special Fatalities. While Hogwarts Legacy was free of microtransactions, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions is a different story, going Free-to-Play, which means “optional” fees for cosmetics and whatnot.
Then there’s the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is expected to add more characters over time and have paid cosmetics. Warner Bros. even confirmed that a cosmetics-only Battle Pass is coming to the third-person shooter, so expect a lot of live-service elements.
Hopefully, Monolith changes their mind and makes the Wonder Woman game free of these live-service elements, though that remains doubtful. Based on what else might be revealed, the best-case scenario is Monolith removing the microtransactions as they did for Shadow of War, but we’ll have to wait and see.
