The first rumour doing the rounds is another title set in World War 2, while it may not be called World War 3, the Second World War has proved a happy hunting ground for the franchise, which has had several releases set in the time period.

With Sledgehammer Games reportedly in charge of developing COD 2021, another game set in World War 2 could be on the horizon.

Sledgehammer also developed Advanced Warfare which featured a radical rework of the movement mechanics thanks to the addition of exo-skeletons.

The change was met with plenty of positivity for those wanting something different from the classic boots-on-the-ground gameplay and after the events of the campaign, a sequel is certainly a possibility.

Could another Modern Warfare title be on the horizon?

This rumour may be more outlandish but there are some rumours surrounding a sequel to the 2019 reboot of the Modern Warfare series. Could Sledgehammer be dipping its toes into a modern-day story for the first time?

The fourth and final theory revolves around a period of time that has yet to be explored by the Call of Duty franchise.

If rumours are to be believed, the Call of Duty franchise is likely to be heading to the Korean War for the very first time under the name of Guerrilla Warfare. It could happen but we will have to wait and see until any official announcements are made before we find out any clues as to what COD 2021 has in store.
