This summer’s been a pretty great one for fighting game fans, with Street Fighter 6 having released to an overwhelmingly positive reception back in June and Mortal Kombat 1 now having arrived.

No matter whether you’ve jumped into Mortal Kombat 1 during early access or waited until its full release, odds are you’ve already gotten a good impression of what it has to offer and developed an opinion on Megan Fox’s voice acting.

While most players have been busy fighting, dataminers and modders have been hard at work digging into the game’s files and developing tweaks for it, with one having given you the chance to get a closer look at the incredible amount of work NetherRealm has put into its array of battle backdrops.

Do you think Mortal Kombat 1’s stages are the series’ most impressive yet?

The mod you’ll need to grab in order to do so is the initial version of ‘MK1Hook’, which is the work of modder Ermaccer. They’ve recently released an unofficial 60 FPS patch for MK1, as well as having claimed to have unearthed an unused framework for a Mortal Kombat 9-esque tag team mode in it.

Their latest mod looks to still be in the early stages of its development, which is unsurprising given how long the game has been out, but currently offers a couple of useful options to players, most notably the option to switch to free camera mode and explore the environment.

In order to demonstrate this, Ermaccer has put together a video of them taking a tour of five of the stages the game has to offer, which makes for very compelling viewing if you’re interested in what lies behind the scenes of locations like The Great Hall and Cage Mansion.

As you can see, the former features plenty of pretty detailed NPCs chilling in the background, including Sindel, Mileena, and Kitana on their thrones. There’s also a garden outside of its central dome, which features some walkways that casually lead off the edge of the map, and a number of floating landmasses.

Cage Mansion, meanwhile, boasts a moving conveyor belt of cars being fed into a tunnel that looks to be a portal to another dimension. The Tea House stage might be the most impressive, boasting what looks like an entire town outside of its main building.

Ermaccer declared these, in addition to the Living Forest and The Gateway, which they also check out in the video, to be “probably the largest [and] most detailed Mortal Kombat stages so far.”
