Now that the Sonic 3 movie is coming to digital platforms soon, fans are curious as to what was cut. There were many scenes left in the editing room, a lot of which were cut for Sonic 4. This now makes fans wonder if the third entry in this film franchise was cut into two movies.
SoniColl posted plenty of behind-the-scenes storyboards on X, revealing some ambitious plans for this movie. While the film was able to tell a complete story, some of these scenes has to be cut so they wouldn’t make this story feel too long. It’s clear that they wanted this to be the biggest Sonic movie ever, but some of that is now being saved for the sequel.
Major spoilers for Sonic 3 below
During the mid-credits sequence of Sonic 3, the blue hedgehog is confronted by multiple copies of Metal Sonic. As he’s about to be jumped by these mechanical clones of himself, Amy Rose saves him with her trusty hammer. The scene cuts before she speaks, presumably so that they can cast her voice actress.
While that mid-credits scene was great, the storyboards show that they may have wanted to put Metal Sonic in the third film. One of the boards shows off Dr. Robotnick with Metal Sonic by his side. Since this didn’t happen in the movie, there’s a very good chance that this ends up being in the fourth installment, minus a change or two.
Amy’s scene is also slightly different in the storyboard, showing that she saves Sonic from a much bigger version of Metal Sonic. Considering how tight the third movie was, saving Amy and Metal Sonic for the fourth movie is a pretty smart idea. Bigger movies are never a bad thing, but knowing when to hold back is always smart.
Funnily enough, it seems the movie was plit into two movies, much like the Sonic 3 game. For those unaware, Sonic 3 on Genesis was meant to be really big but the devs at SEGA were stretched too thin. In order to salvage their ideas, the game was split into two parts, with Sonic & Knuckles released a year later.
If you haven’t seen the movie yet, Sonic 3 will be available in digital stores on January 21. Check out who voiced Shadow the Hedgehog and play as him in Sonic X Shadow Generations.
