Besides the release of Marvel Rivals this year, Marvel Games also announced that they’re working with Uncharted director Amy Hennig on a Captain America/Black Panther game dubbed Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.
Although the Game Awards did not reveal any new details about the title, Hennig revealed some story details about the game, such as the setting and the conflict between Captain America and Wakanda.
The Plot of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra
In a recent talk with Entertainment Weekly, Hennig briefly details the story of Rise of Hydra and where the characters are when they’re introduced.
She explains, "[the development of the game] led us to do a bunch of interesting things… one of which was to not only tell a story with a young Steve Rogers who's still trying to find his feet, as opposed to the more seasoned guy that we've seen in a lot of the films. It also let us introduce a new Black Panther of 1943."
The game is described as a globe-trotting adventure. One interesting location relevant to the plot is the secret city of Wakanda, which is protected by the Black Panther. In Rise of Hydra Azzuri, T’Challa’s grandfather is the current bearer of the title.
The country is known to be very secretive, but the plot will somehow have them dragged into the story—possibly with Hydra discovering the nation in their search for Vibranium. Hennig goes on:
"Wakanda at this point in time is hidden away from the outside world and protected by this impenetrable jungle… They are non-interventionist, but events transpire that pull them into the conflict. They have to protect their interests. The world is getting smaller. No satellites yet, but there will be soon. You can shoot down planes that maybe want to fly over Wakanda, but how long can you stay in the shadows?"
Black Panther v Captain America
Though Black Panther and Captain America are categorized as heroes, the two won’t start the game as allies. They’re actually at odds with one another at first. Hennig says the two are "confronting the same enemies and they're concerned about the same events that are transpiring, but they're initially almost working against each other. Good people have to work together to overcome evil. If you separate, then you're not going to succeed."
In addition to BP and Cap, the game will feature perspectives from two other characters. One is Gabriel Jones, a Howling Commando, a US military sniper. The other is Nanali, a Wakdnan spy assigned to Nazi-occupied Paris.
A Cinematic Experience
With Hennig best known for her work on the Uncharted games, fans are expecting Marvel 1943 to be a cinematic platformer. It’s interesting that this game should also come out near the release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle; a franchise that clearly inspired the globe-trotting, tomb raiding adventures of Nathan Drake in the Uncharted movies.
No gameplay has been revealed yet, but it’s likely that there could be some new trailer drops soon—possibly around the time of the release of Captain America: Brave New World which releases February 2025.
As of now, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra still has no release date, but fans are hopeful it comes out sometime next year.
