Although Season 3 Reloaded for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 has just started, attention is already turning towards the next instalment of the Call of Duty franchise.
Following the appearance of a reveal date, further leaks have uncovered more information surrounding Call of Duty 2023, much to the curiosity of fans getting to grips with the latest mid-season update.
The latest leak has unveiled the name of the next release and rather than exploring a new area of history, developers have decided to stick with an all-too-familiar name resulting in plenty of cautious optimism from the community.
The Call of Duty 2023 name has appeared
According to an Insider Gaming report, Call of Duty 2023 is named Modern Warfare 3 (Modern Warfare III).
The report also reveals the development of the game is led by Sledgehammer Games with other Activision studios supporting it. Prior to the leak, it was rumoured 2023 wouldn't see a Call of Duty title launching. Instead, a DLC containing a number of multiplayer maps and a campaign.
Now, Modern Warfare 3 will act as the sequel to 2022's Modern Warfare 2, completing the most recent Modern Warfare 2 trilogy. The game will feature a new multiplayer experience in addition to a new campaign, and a brand-new Warzone 2 map.
Alongside single-player and multiplayer, Modern Warfare 3 will see zombies return to Call of Duty for the first time since Vanguard. The last zombies offering was poorly received and if the leak is accurate, the undead will feature in Outbreak 2.0, a more open-world mode compared to the hugely popular round-based action.
As always, it's important to take leaks with a pinch of salt but with all of the reports mentioning a sequel to Modern Warfare 2 is on the cards, the Modern Warfare 3 name returning isn't a surprise. Can it surpass the success of 2022's launch? Only time will tell.
