Dead Space 3 is often seen as the worst game in the series by fans and critics alike. It seems that producer Chuck Beaver agrees, as he recently said that he wishes they could completely rewrite the game’s story from scratch.

Speaking with YouTuber CaptainBribo (via PCGamesN), Beaver says he would rewrite the story from scratch and focus more on the game’s horror aspects. Like many fans and critics, Beaver didn’t enjoy the focus on action over horror, as the previous titles had excellent horror atmospheres.

If it were up to Beaver, he would have made Dead Space 3 double down on the horror with a broken Isaac Clarke. Beaver feels that this is the only logical conclusion for Clarke, since he is essentially a broken man in Dead Space 2, despite the slightly happy ending.

"I would just start from complete scratch, and I would make this—like we talked about—in Dead Space 2, he's broken. And now, this is the adventure of Isaac in Dead Space 3—broken Isaac. He tried to do the thing, tried to do the truth, it broke him,” explains Beaver. “Now we're in the consequences of him being broken.”

Dead Space 3 is an infamous part of EA’s history and is one of the reasons why Visceral Games is no more. It’s why many fans were furious when the remake was announced, as they did after killing the studio that made this series in the first place.

Mechanically, Dead Space 3 was a perfectly fine game, but everything surrounding the shooter left a bad taste in the mouths of many. Aside from abandoning horror and forcing co-op, the game also charged players for some of the worst microtransactions, including in-game equipment and more.

Now that the Dead Space remake has shown to EA that horror sells, there’s always a chance that the third game may be redone much like Beaver wants. While it might not have an unreliable narrator, the reception should mean that we can avoid the awful love triangle and tone down the action a bit.

For better or worse, Dead Space 3 is readily available on PC, as are the first two Dead Space games. These days, gamers are probably better off waiting for the sequels to be remade, but it’s good to have a reminder of how things can easily go off the rails.
