Toriyama passed away at age 68 from an acute subdural hematoma, a damaged blood vessel between the brain and the skull. The sad news of the iconic mangaka’s passing was revealed in a press release on the Dragon Ball website on Friday morning.

“It's our deep regret that he still had several works in the middle of creation with great enthusiasm. Also, he would have many more things to achieve,” the press release reads.

“However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world. Thanks to the support of so many people around the world, he has been able to continue his creative activities for over 45 years. We hope that Akira Toriyama's unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come.”

Akira Toriyama’s funeral service was already held with family and a “very few relatives”. A commemorative gathering for fans has yet to be confirmed, but an event is currently being planned.

Akira Toriyama may be most known for his work on the Dragon Ball series, the manga that brought anime to the West in the 90s, but their work also extended into the world of video games. Toriyama’s unique art style fuelled the world of the stunning RPG Chrono Trigger as well as the entirety of the 35-year-old Dragon Quest, from its heroes to its large bestiary of stunning monsters.

The Dragon Ball creator’s influence has been felt the world over, and their stunning art style is one of the most recognisable looks a project can have. Even outside of IP like Dragon Ball and Dragon Quest, Toriyama’s art will live on to continue inspiring artists across the globe.

Akira Toriyama had multiple projects in the works at the time of his passing. For example, the artists’ underrated series Sand Land is finally getting a video game adaptation this year. Alongside that, new Dragon Ball projects are still in development, as well as Dragon Quest 12.
