Breakdown
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was a huge game, the development was tough
- The devs pushed through because they thought all this effort would be worth it
- Rebirth's critical acclaim proves the devs were right
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth isn’t just a big improvement over the first game, as the JRPG is massive, packed to the brim with mini-games and optional bosses. Considering how big this game ended up being, finding out the development was tough isn’t a surprise, though the devs insisted on pushing through.
During the Square Enix developer roundup (via GamesRadar), lead user interface artist Hsueh Huei Liao said that the workload was pretty tough. Liao even said that each mini-game is so varied that any one of them could have been a single game in itself. The dev also said that this game’s variety also required a ton of UI, but complimented his team for working so hard.
“As a creator, it was very fun to work on, but the workload was also pretty tough. Even so, the UI team worked hard and without compromise on each and every one of them, to such a high standard that each one is almost like its own standalone game,” Liao said about working on the sequel.
Overall, it seems that the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth development team was pleased with the final product. While that could easily be corporate speak for hard work paying off, the devs went on to make their board for the Queen’s Blood card game. You don’t go through all of that effort if there isn’t any passion behind it, at least we hope that’s the case.
The hard work of these devs has paid off, as Rebirth is currently one of the highest-rated games in this franchise. Many critics loved the amount of freedom given to them, as well as the improved combat and gorgeous visuals. We were also a big fan of the game, giving it a high 9 out of 10 in our review.
