Palworld is dominating game sales right now, despite most people agreeing that it’s not exactly the most original idea out there. Gears of War creator Cliff “CliffyB” Bleszinski said that he pitched an idea like this to Epic Games years ago.
On Twitter, Bleszinski said that he pitched a “medieval Pokémon” game to Epic Games many years ago. The Gears of War creator then went on to say that he considers Palworld’s success validating, showing that his idea could have gone somewhere.
When Bleszinski was asked by fans about a similar pitch, the developer simply said that it just didn’t go anywhere, which is sad. Bleszinski also said that he originally wanted his game to start as a mobile title, which made sense at the time since mobile was huge at the time.
Considering how many Pokémon-like games have been released on the indies before Palworld, Epic turning down this idea seems misjudged. That being said, we aren’t sure if it would reach the same heights as Pocket Pair, Inc.’s surprise hit, especially since the pitch wasn’t “Pokémon with guns.”
Talk surrounding this survival title is still at an all-time high, as we near the game being a week away from its release. Sales for this game continue to do incredibly well, as it has sold 8 million copies already and it could keep going up. If things keep going at this rate, Palworld could end up outselling Pokémon Legends: Arceus, as it’s already selling faster than the game.
It’s not all positive news surrounding Palworld, as the game has been hit with some serious plagiarism allegations. Due to the potential use of Game Freak assets, The Pokémon Company has said that they will be investigating their competitor. Whether that’s a serious threat or they just want people to stop messaging about the controversy, we’ll never know.
