April 6, 2023: Read on to know more about the transmog system in Hogwarts Legacy.

Looking to stave off the fashion police around the biggest school of witchcraft and wizardry? The Hogwarts Legacy transmog system will help. Though you shouldn't expect to see the in-game equivalent of a shopping mall in this one given the iconic British school uniform vibe around it all, you will be able to tweak your fit with colours, accessories, and more. Here's what we know.

Over the years, it's become obvious that character customization doesn't start and end with face shape, body type, and eye colour. More and more games are living and dying with their clothing options, and nothing undermines the idea of dressing how you want in a video game when it comes at the cost of stats, power, and skills.

Hogwarts Legacy transmog system explained

At the start of 2023, we were given a quick look as to how the Hogwarts Legacy transmog system would work. Rather than turning into something filled with consumables and other single-use items, complicating the whole thing, it looks as if Hogwarts Legacy just separates stat-awarding gear with standard gear and skins.

You'll be able to purchase, unlock, and find various different outfits and accessories in your time with Hogwarts Legacy, and you'll be able to switch to using their appearance simply by visiting the 'Gear' menu inside the Field Guide that acts as a catalogue for every other collectable you find.

That means you'll be able to wear your favourite robe without worry. If it's found early on and doesn't quite have the perks of one you pick up toward the end, you'll be able to use the bonuses of the better one while retaining the appearance of the one you prefer.

You can see an example of this in KhrazeGaming's video from earlier in the year. It's also worth noting that Hogwarts Legacy does lock some cosmetic items behind things like pre-order bonuses, special editions, and a linked Harry Potter Fan Club account, so be sure to look into those before you start dreaming up your look.

If you're wondering where the transmog term comes from, it's long been used in games like World of Warcraft, which features thousands of different gear pieces to swap out. Final Fantasy XIV, another MMO in the same vein, uses Glamour as its term instead, but it all relates the same general idea of benefitting from the stats of one piece of gear while retaining the outward appearance of another.

In the case of Harry Potter, transmog (or transmogrification) actually fits perfectly with the 2001 trading card set.

Should you sell gear in Hogwarts Legacy?

There's nothing to fear in selling gear in Hogwarts Legacy. In fact, it's one of the best ways to earn gold fast, and you'll need to complete tricky Merlin Trials will be the only way to increase your gear slots and be allowed to keep opening chests if you don't.

The best part is that you keep the appearance of any unique gear you find,. You can still theoretically wear a favourite outfit long after it has become outdated and replaced.
