Countering Black Panther
Here’s the thing about Black Panter: he has mobility—an insane amount of it. Despite being a Duelist with a low health bar, he can deal significant damage in a short period. Coupling that with his speed, he can wreak havoc for the backline. While there aren’t many counters for this character due to the traits he possesses, a few heroes in the lineup can make a difference.
For starters, players should go for characters that have stuns or the ability to slow down Black Panther. Due to his speed, he can escape the battle pretty easily. With characters that can limit his chances of retreat through the above-mentioned abilities, Black Panther becomes easy to deal with.
How to Counter Black Panther
Below, we’ll discuss a few characters who are a great counter for the Panther. Each character mentioned in the list brings something unique to the table, whether it’s having the ability to stun the character, keep him at bay, or deal tremendous damage to him in a way that ‘disables’ him.
1. Mantis (Strategist)
As mentioned, Black Panther relies heavily on his mobility to influence the enemy team’s backline. For that purpose, Mantis is one of the most potent counters for the Black Panther in Marvel Rivals. Having the ability to put him to sleep for about 3.5 seconds through Spore Slumber, Mantis can create a window of opportunity for the team to deal significant damage to the Panther.
Additionally, Mantis has healing abilities, ensuring that he and his teammates can recover from any devastating blows the Black Panther deals them. Lastly, Mantis’ Allied Inspiration, which enhances his teammates' damage for a certain period, makes the fight harder for the Black Panther to win, forcing him to retreat before he proves fatal.
2. Hela (Duelist)
Hela is another great pick in our category of counters for Black Panther. Unlike Mantis though, we’re not recommending Hela mainly because of her abilities, but also due to the damage she packs in. Due to a high DPS, Hela already makes the fight relatively difficult for the Black Panther to win, unlike other Strategists or Duelists he may encounter.
Her Soul Drainer ability further intensifies this, not only enhancing Hela’s damage output but also stunning Black Panther for a few seconds. In cases where Black Panther somehow manages to dive the Asgardian Goddess, she can use Astral Flock to retreat the fight, making it harder for Black Panther to secure vital eliminations.
3. Iron Man (Duelist)
One of Black Panther’s offensive strategies is diving into his opponents. Iron Man is the perfect counter for this—and not only because he deals tremendous damage, but also because he can do so from a distance.
His Hyper-Velocity ability further enhances this trait, maintaining a clean distance from the Black Panther while dealing significant damage to him. Additionally, some of Iron Man’s abilities can be used in a combo, depleting Black Panther’s health bar before he has an appreciable window to make his moves. Combining the Repulsor Blast and Unibeam with Armor Overdrive is a great example here.
4. Groot
Another great counter for the Black Panther is Groot because he directly attacks one of Black Panther’s strongest assets—his mobility. By having Groot equipped, players can use his abilities to make it harder for Black Panther to navigate his way during battle.
The Rooted Vines Ability is an excellent example, being able to ‘lock’ the character in one place. Additionally, he can also create walls in place for the Panther, making it difficult for him to maneuver his way. All in all, Groot’s abilities allow his teammates to ‘focus’ their attacks on the character without facing severe (or any) repercussions.
Top that up with Groot’s endurance, you’ve got a pretty good chance to send Black Panther back where he came from.
5. Winter Soldier
Black Panther uses his mobility for two purposes: to get in a fight and to escape one. The Winter Solider perfectly counters the latter with his Bionic Hook, disrupting the Panther movement and deeming him helpless while trying to escape. If hooked at the wrong time, Black Panther is as good as dead.
