If you’re here, it means Jeff the Land Shark has gobbled you up and spat you into the deep, dark abyss, resulting in your imminent death. Don’t worry, you’re not the first. Jeff is a menace and one of Marvel Rivals’ most dangerous heroes.

The game has only been out for a month, but players are already losing their minds over this shark’s terrifying ultimate ability. Once they hear Jeff’s garbling in the distance, everyone, including Jeff’s teammates, fears for their lives.

Of course, in video games, every skill can be countered. Jeff’s ultimate attack is no exception; any hero can avoid it. Here’s how to counter it for each of the game’s 33 playable characters:

Vanguards

Captain America

Don’t even think about using Cap’s shield against Jeff’s ultimate. Cap’s agility makes him effective at evading Jeff’s ‘circle of death.’ He gains a 33% movement boost with his Leading Dash ability, making him elusive at higher levels. Alternate evasive actions like Fearless Leap and Liberty Rush let him maneuver across the battlefield with ease.

Doctor Strange

Among Vanguards, Doctor Strange is the only one capable of flight. With his Cloak of Levitation, he can rise swiftly above the ground, avoiding danger. This is particularly useful when surrounded by enemies or when Shield of the Seraphim is on cooldown. Fly as soon as you hear Jeff’s ultimate, and hold the fly button to maintain height.

Groot

This flora colossus lacks mobility, making him easy prey for Jeff. The best option is to run before Jeff’s circle of death envelops him. Groot can create walls to elevate his position, but this is risky and not always effective. Stay as far away as possible.

Hulk

Hulk can simply leap away from Jeff’s ultimate, making him a tough target. He can also use his Indestructible Shield to block damage for himself and nearby allies, rendering Jeff’s ultimate useless.

Magneto

Despite being the Master of Magnetism, Magneto cannot fly in Marvel Rivals. The best counter to Jeff’s ultimate is using his shield, which grants immunity to all damage. Alternatively, Magneto can activate his ultimate, Meteor M, to levitate and hurl a giant rock at Jeff.

Peni Parker

Peni can easily avoid Jeff’s ultimate using her Cybernetic Web Strands, allowing her to zip across the field. However, she becomes vulnerable to Jeff’s attack during her Spider ultimate. Use it cautiously.

Thor

The God of Thunder may be slow, but he can dash away from danger using Mjolnir. Timing is critical. If Jeff swallows you, Storm Surge can help you reach the nearest ledge.

Venom

Venom can swing away using his symbiote powers. If they’re on cooldown, climbing walls can help evade Jeff’s ultimate.

Duelists

Black Panther

With his agility, Black Panther is rarely caught by Jeff’s ultimate. He can dash away effortlessly. If Black Panther makes it out alive, Jeff mains are dead meat.

Black Widow

One of the weaker Duelists, Black Widow excels at ranged attacks but struggles in close combat. Jeff can easily catch her, though her sprint ability provides a brief chance to escape.

Hawkeye

Hawkeye is vulnerable to Jeff’s ultimate due to his poor close-range abilities. While he can double-jump to higher ground, his chances of survival depend on luck.

Hela

Hela’s Astral Flock transforms her into a Nostrond Crow and glides away. Her ultimate, Goddess of Death, grants flight and immunity to crowd control, making her a solid counter.

Magik

Magik can use her Stepping Discs to teleport out of danger, countering Jeff’s ultimate with style.

Strategists

Adam Warlock

Adam Warlock’s lack of mobility makes him a prime target for Jeff’s ultimate. However, his second-life ability ensures a quick return to the battlefield.

Cloak & Dagger

Cloak’s Dark Teleportation ability shrouds allies in safety, protecting the team from Jeff’s ultimate. Timing is key; it lasts only two seconds.

Rocket Raccoon

Rocket’s Rocket Dash and wall-climbing make him nearly impossible for Jeff to catch.

Jeff’s ultimate isn’t unbeatable. The more you play, the more you’ll realize he’s one of the weakest heroes in the game. But he’s so adorable that we can’t help but play him - and pat his head.
