How do I change character appearance in Mortal Kombat 1?
To customise your character's appearance in Mortal Kombat 1, head to the dedicated Kustomise option from the main menu. Underneath this are two options: Fighter and Kameo. This will determine whether you're customising your main fighter who you control during a fight, or your Kameo companion.
How to customise fighter in Mortal Kombat 1
When you select Fighter from the Kustomise menu in Mortal Kombat 1, you're taken to a screen showing all of the playable characters in the game. You can then choose which one to edit, which pulls up a preview of their current appearance, plus details on how many customisable items you have for them.
There are four different customisable elements for each character in Mortal Kombat 1: Gear, Palettes, Taunts, and Finishers.
Once you've chosen which character to customise, select them and it'll pull up those four options to look at. There will be a number below the header for each option, denoting how many items you have to choose between.

Then simply select your area of customisation, browse through the items you have unlock, and select the one you wish to equip. You can also tag a specific choice as a Favorite, likely making it the default any time that character crops up. There's also an option to randomise the character's gear from the top down, if you've got too many items and not enough time to select from them all.
Then simply back out to the main menu - no need to manually save - and the next time you use that fighter, they'll have their newly-customised gear equipped. It's as easy as that!
How to customise Kameo character in Mortal Kombat 1
Conveniently, the process for customising a Kameo character in Mortal Kombat 1 is broadly the same as the steps listed above. Once you select the corresponding Kameo option on the main menu, it'll pull up a character selection screen.
The only difference with customising Kameo characters is that there's only one element you can change: their Palettes. This is the character's clothing and its shade, so there's still plenty to choose from.
As with customising core characters in Mortal Kombat 1, select the character of your choice, browse through the options you've unlocked, and select the one you like. It'll then be autosaved and ready for you to use in battle!
How to get more cosmetic items in Mortal Kombat 1
If you're now wondering how to get a hold of more cosmetic items with which to customise characters in Mortal Kombat 1, there's a range of ways.
One of the most reliable ways of getting new gear is by playing through the main Story Mode. After each fight, you'll get at least one item linked to the opponent you've just taken down.
You also get cosmetic items each time you level up in Mortal Kombat 1. One of the best ways to quickly farm XP is to play through the early levels of Invasion mode, so look out for new cosmetic items as you play that and level up.
The same goes for completing weekly quests in Mortal Kombat 1: if you manage to complete all six of them before the timer resets, you can nab whichever cosmetic items is position as that week's reward. Likewise, as you level up a fighter's Mastery by earning XP as them, you'll get some skins and moves as a reward for each level.
You can also get cosmetic items from the Shrine, which acts as a gacha mechanic in Mortal Kombat 1. You'll spend your Koins on a roll, in the hopes of getting something good.
Lastly, some rarer cosmetic items can be bought from the store in Mortal Kombat 1. These cost Dragon Krystals, the premium currency purchased via microtransactions.
