Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 isn’t available to the public yet, but critics are already calling it the best PS5 exclusive by a country mile. What makes this more fitting is that the critic scores have also deemed the superhero title Insomniac’s best game ever.
The game’s overall score at Metacritic is an outstanding 91, showing that Insomniac Games have really outdone themselves. Surprisingly, despite the company’s consistency over the years, this is only their second game to go over 90 on the site aggregator.
Insomniac only has two other games that have gotten a 90 from Metacritic — Spyro: Year of the Dragon on PS1 and Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal on PS2. Both platformers are pretty outstanding titles, though it’s weird to consider them Insomniac’s best games ever.
Fan feedback to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 should be really interesting, as both Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales were beloved by fans. Peter’s game got a great 88, while Miles got a solid 85, which is still pretty good when you consider how his game is essentially an expansion.
Prior to making Marvel games, Insomniac was mostly known for their Ratchet & Clank games on PS2, PS3, PS4, and even PS5. All of these titles were very solid but didn’t deviate from the formula, which is probably why they never went above the 80’s.
The company also worked on Sunset Overdrive, a great Xbox exclusive that may have helped set the foundation for Spider-Man. Both games are colorful open-world titles with fun ways to traverse, so Xbox players kind of have Spider-Man (not really).
All in all, based on their resume, it’s clear that Insomniac Games is a very talented studio and the acclaim they’ve received for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is earned. Even the folks at Gfinity like this game, as we gave it a perfect 10/10 score in our review. Some fans are complaining about its length, but they haven't played it, so their opinion doesn't matter.
