It feels as though Star Wars fans have been crying out for a game that lets them play as a criminal in the Star Wars universe, exploring the inner workings of the galaxy's crime syndicates that have been largely untouched by existing games. Star Wars Outlaws hopes to answer this demand, and the game has just been given a release window that's scheduled before the end of 2024.
Funnily enough, it was a blog post on the Disney Parks website that let slip the release date for Star Wars Outlaws. Given that this is the first we've heard about the game's release date, being number 22 on the "24 Oooh-worthy Things at Disney" was probably a more low-key announcement than developer Ubisoft had hoped for.
Set between the films Episode V: Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, Star Wars Outlaws follows the character of outlaw Kay Vess and her Merqaal companion Nix. The game will tell the story of how they attempt to pull off "one of the biggest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen", in the "first-ever open-world Star Wars game" that spans numerous planets.
With its initial reveal only 6 months ago, Star Wars Outlaws has somewhat dropped off of people's radar since then. With the slew of high-quality, critically acclaimed RPGs that have been released since then, Ubisoft will have its work cut out if Star Wars Outlaws is going to impress.
Currently, there's speculation as to whether the character Cal Kestis could make an appearance, cameo or otherwise, in Star Wars Outlaws. The Star Wars Jedi protagonist's fate is still yet unknown, so he may still be kicking around the galaxy when Star Wars Outlaws takes place.
Unfortunately, no further details on Star Wars Outlaws have been confirmed by Ubisoft or Disney, even in light of the game's release window being revealed. Hopefully, by the time we get a finalised release date, the surrounding hype for Star Wars: Outlaws might amount to a little more than being "Oooh-worthy".
