With the influx of open-world and action-adventure roleplaying games, some video game genres have already bitten the dust. For example, great vehicular combat games are scarce nowadays.

Stealth games are on the verge of fading into the dark, with recent implementations in newer games lacking more depth, as mentioned by some stealth fans in the gaming subreddit.

Gamers question whether these games have gone unnoticed or are just hidden in plain sight.

Originally posted on Reddit by user u/Mr_P3, they asked where all the fantastic stealth mechanics and games gamers knew and loved went, considering that the new Assassin’s Creed Shadows is releasing this year. They continued mentioning some game titles, such as Metal Gear and Dishonored, saying that these games sold well, albeit stealth games.

Many fans agreed with their sentiment, saying that stealth games in the current gaming market are pretty much the same as what these games try to implement: optional stealth. With the stealth mechanic becoming increasingly optional and less rewarding in newer games, it is easy to say that the genre is overlooked.

The earlier Assassin’s Creed titles were considered some of the best stealth games, along with Splinter Cell. However, Assassin’s Creed games are not what they used to be, and recent franchise installments have focused on a more direct approach to combat. Stealth in Assassin’s Creed no longer encourages silent takedowns.

Another title that kept the stealth genre exciting was Metal Gear Solid. Now that Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater has a tentative 2024 release date, gamers are hopeful to experience stealth again in its purest form.

Splinter Cell is also one of the most iconic video game franchises when it comes to stealth. However, Ubisoft seems to have benched the franchise with no news or updates regarding the new Splinter Cell remake since its announcement in 2021.

Fellow stealth fans quickly suggested games with excellent mechanics, such as Thief, Styx: Master of Shadows, and Shadow Tactics. These games offer a substantial stealth experience for gamers looking for more in-depth stealth gameplay.

Stealth as a genre may not be everyone's cup of tea, as some may prefer flashy combat and challenging bosses such as the ones in Black Myth: Wukong. But a resurgence in stealth games, starting with Metal Gear Solid Delta: Solid Snake and Splinter Cell Remake, will bring back long-time fans of the genre.
