Fans were shocked when the first season of The Last of Us was able to cover events for the entire first game, but it could be different when it comes to the second season of TLOU.

A new trailer has been dropped for the highly-anticipated series, and it could give fans a hint of where the show plans to end by the second season.

New Trailer for The Last of Us Season 2

HBO has released a trailer for the second season of The Last of Us. The trailer hints at many major plot points, including introducing the new antagonist, Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever).

Though Abby’s more extensive backstory is explored in the second half of The Last of Us Part II, it looks like a lot of her story will be pushed forward for the TV series—specifically, how the first season's events directly affected her.

As for Ellie, she does take center stage as the main protagonist of Part II, so it makes more sense that she’s in this trailer more than Joel.

Admittedly, Joel and Ellie’s relationship was at the very core of the first game, and although Joel takes a backseat storywise in the second one, his bond with Ellie will still be one of the main driving forces of the plot.

Since the show's first season, fans have been speculating about how far the series would go in adapting Part II. Some theories have gone so far as to have the season adapt the entire game again beat-by-beat or add some in-between storylines and end with a major character death.

The trailer suggests that the series will adapt Ellie’s entire rampage through Seattle. It also suggests that Abby’s backstory will be advanced to help audiences sympathize with her early on in the series.

For the first half of TLOU2, Abby is a complete mystery compared to the game. Then, players are forced to play through her backstory in a sick game of empathy and manipulation designed by director Neil Druckmann.

At this point, the best guess is that the 2nd season will probably end when Ellie and Abby cross paths in Seattle—that’s where Abby’s main backstory kicks in.

Though some of her story is showcased in the trailer, she has a completely independent arc, including her life with the WLF and her run-in with a couple of Seraphites—characters that haven’t even been cast for this season, so it’s possible they won’t be in it this time.

The second season of The Last of Us is expected to premiere on Max this April.
