Bungie is expanding its horizons into a different genre with their upcoming MOBA featuring Smash-like elements.

The studio has been quietly developing this brand-new IP after posting on their official Twitter account on August 19, 2023, that they were seeking people with diverse backgrounds to join their team.

Codenamed Gummy Bears, this project is a team-based, competitive MOBA inspired by popular games like Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros., Dota 2, Overwatch, and several cozy lo-fi indie games with aesthetics similar to Stardew Valley.

Gummy Bears is intended to appeal to a younger audience than Bungie’s more mature titles, like Destiny 2 and the upcoming Marathon. That said, it’s not exclusively for kids — adults can enjoy it too!

According to a report by The Game Post, Bungie’s work on Gummy Bears has revealed several key details, including its MOBA elements, Smash-like gameplay, and lo-fi cozy vibes.

As a MOBA, the roster features characters divided into various roles: Support, Attack, and Defense. This is a common formula in games like Overwatch and Marvel Rivals.

The rules of Gummy Bears are reportedly similar to those of Super Smash Bros., where knocking opponents off the map is key to securing victory. However, Bungie adds its twist by incorporating role-based gameplay and a cozy, lo-fi aesthetic.

To make things more interesting, the game will feature a variety of modes, indicating it might not be limited to traditional PvP. Although details are scarce, we can speculate that these modes could include 4v4 matches or even PvE content that complements the game’s Smash-like mechanics.

Development on Gummy Bears has been ongoing for at least three years, as the August 2023 Twitter post suggested. The game is still in active development, with around 40 Bungie developers working on the project. Early reports suggest the game has been internally praised as one of Bungie’s “most fun” projects to emerge from incubation.

While this new IP is exciting, it marks a significant departure from Bungie’s signature style, making it a risky move to attract a different audience. With Marathon in development and more Destiny 2 expansions on the way, it’s clear that Sony’s acquisition has pushed Bungie into overdrive with its ambitious lineup of projects.

Gummy Bears does not have a release date, but we can’t wait to hear more about it.
