Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann has opened Pandora's box after claiming that The Last of Us might have "one final chapter" to its story in the recent Grounded II documentary.
Similar to Part 1, Naughty Dog released a fascinating two-hour documentary about the creation of TLOU 2, which you can watch for free on YouTube.
It details the hardships of development on such a daunting project and tackles some personal issues for everyone involved in the game, especially after the decontextualised leaked footage did irreparable damage to the story's perception just weeks before release.
Druckmann, who co-directed and co-wrote The Last of Us 2, confirmed that the idea for a third, and possibly final chapter in this post-apocalyptic world, has been conceived, one that's very much "its own thing."
I've been thinking about it- is there a concept there? And for years I haven't been able to find that concept. But recently that's changed, I don't know the story but I do have that concept. To me is as exciting as one, as exciting as two, is its own thing but yet has this throughline for all three. So it does feel like there's probably one more chapter to the story
What is the concept behind The Last of Us 3? Sadly, that wasn't revealed, meaning fans will have to speculate about potential paths the franchise might take in the not-so-near future, considering there isn't a proper story written for the game.
Is it even going to be a video game? Taking into consideration the huge success of The Last of Us HBO's adaptation, which recently found its Abby for season 2, we might see Druckmann stick entirely with the live-action version of the universe he helped create.
Having said that, after the cancellation of The Last of Us Online, Naughty Dog confirmed they're working on several "brand-new" single-player games. Could TLOU 3 be one of them? Only time will tell.
