Just hours before the official launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Call of Duty fans are divided about a recent update of the game's aim assist for controller users.
During the game's Multiplayer Beta, aim assist is fully turned off once players reach point-blank range. This means that controller players would have to fully aim when trying to shoot at point-blank range, making aiming much more challenging when dealing with enemies at these closer ranges.
In a patch note dated October 23, Activision stated that they had updated the controller aim assist to slowly become more intense and noticeable when going from point black range up to a certain distance.
This change will let controller players utilize aim assist, albeit a much weaker version. The aim assist will continue to be active and slowly increase in strength as players put some distance between themselves and their enemies.
Players are now divided on whether this change is welcome or will ruin the game's multiplayer modes on Day 1. X user @WZStatsGG or Warzone Meta shared the section of the patch note and asked the community whether this change was good overall.
Some controller players favor having a weaker aim assist at point-blank ranges compared to having none at all, while others feel that these kinds of changes are almost identical to auto-aim.
The X post has since been shared within the Black Ops 6 Reddit community and has garnered various reactions from fans. Other controller players feel this change is too overpowered, while keyboard-and-mouse users think it will not affect them.
Some players think that aim assist will receive a huge buff later down the line, and this change will be detrimental to keyboard-and-mouse users.

Discussions about aim assist existed long before Black Ops 6, with some players even asking how to turn crossplay off should they want to avoid controller players. However, only console players can turn off crossplay, and PC players will always have crossplay active, making aim assist a much bigger talking point when considering multiplayer.
With Black Ops 6's new Omnimovement feature, players can expect much faster movements during encounters. Many players will master this to have an edge in Call of Duty's competitive modes. An updated aim assist will play a massive role in turning these fights into wins, but it will always be up to players to improve their aim and skills.
