Season 1 of Diablo 4 launches this week and many fans are still confused about exactly how it will work. If you have played previous seasons in Diablo 3, then you likely know most of what a new one in Diablo 4 will entail. There will be a Battle Pass, brand new content in the form of items and quests, and a beefy update to go along with everything. However, there has been some mass confusion about what progress carries over to Diablo 4 Season 1.
Players aren't sure if they get to keep using their existing characters in Season 1 or if any of their world progress gets transferred to the new realm.
Below, we will lay out exactly what you can expect from Season 1 of Diablo 4 and see everything that will and won't carry over.

What progress carries over in Season 1 of Diablo 4?
For starters, let's get this out of the way: if you want to take part in everything Season 1 has to offer, then you will have to create a new character. While you can continue using your pre-Season 1 characters all you want, they will only receive tiny portions of the new seasonal content. This does not include Battle Pass rewards, the Season 1 questline, and the new Malignant effects.
Players that choose to create a new character and take part in Season 1 will be a part of the Seasonal Realm. Those who play with their existing characters will be a part of the Eternal Realm.
Now, with that out of the way, let's just get into what other progress will transfer over with your account for Season 1. If you were expecting some bad news here, then you will be pleasantly surprised. As long as you're using the same account to play Season 1 in Diablo 4, all of your map progress will carry over.
This includes every Altar of Lilith you discovered and all of the regions that you discovered in Sanctuary. The latter basically means your map won't be all fogged up like it normally is at the start of a new playthrough. Unfortunately, your Waypoints are not included in this, meaning you have to travel to those again. Luckily, they will still show up on the map, so you will know exactly where they are located.
In addition to that, all of the Renown points you earned from finding Lilith Altars and discovering map regions will be saved. Although, your Skill Points and increased Healing Potion charges earned through Renown will not be carrying over. You will have to start at square one when it comes to those bits of progression. This also means that none of your Paragon Points will be transferring to your new character in Season 1.
Those that choose to participate in Season 1 of Diablo 4 will find much of the "grindy" elements that come with a new character have carried over from their previous character. Of course, there's still a ton more work to be done when starting the new season.
