When they’re not visiting a friendly settlement or setting off car alarms, Fallout 4 players can often be found fighting their way through the many dangerous locales of The Commonwealth.

Given the many perils that come with completing quests in a post-apocalyptic environment that’s often highly-irradiated or filled with unfriendly folks who shoot first and ask questions later, it’s no surprise that those who opt to play on a higher difficulty have to spend a lot of caps on gear to protect themselves.

For those who’ve spent so much time in the wastes that they aren’t even fazed by the thought of encountering a gang of Deathclaws during a rad-storm, there’s a mod that can make the game even more difficult, as a streamer has recently experienced first-hand.

How long do you think you could last in Fallout 4’s Frost mod before giving up?

The Twitch and YouTube personality in question, Joov, got up to a bunch of wacky hijinks in Skyrim last month, thanks to some audience-submitted quests that saw them tastefully redecorate the Dark Brotherhood’s abandoned shack and even have a go at building a fort of out of cheese wheels.

Recently, they set themselves the challenge of spending 24 hours playing ‘FROST Survival Simulator’, a massive mod that transforms Fallout 4 into a “free-form survival game” with all different mechanics, enemies and lore, all of which are designed to offer a fresh challenge for even the most hardened of Commonwealth veterans.

Having declared at the start of the run’s first stream that their only aim was to: “spend 24 hours in total with the mod and see what we’re able to accomplish”, Joov was immediately plunged into a Deathclaw encounter and suffered their first death just before the timer they’d set up hit eight minutes elapsed.

By the time this opening foray ended, the timer had hit the four hour mark, while Joov’s death count sat at 49. This number had increased to 104 by the halfway point of the run, reached when the clock hit the 12 hour milestone midway through its third session.

At the start of the streamer’s most recent broadcast, which took the run from just before 19 hours through the full 24, their death count had increased to 163, gradually growing to a final total of 211 as they battled through the stream.

With 20 minutes to go in the run, Joov elected to calmly let it run out, summarising the time spent with the mod by saying: “It broke my heart, crushed my soul, made me regret ever picking (streaming) up as a job (and) it genuinely made me hate this game for a little bit.”

Regardless of whether you’re now loading up the mod with the hopes of coming out of your playing sessions with it slightly less scarred than poor Joov, make sure to follow us for more updates on interesting mods like this one for Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas.
