After a mixed bag of releases, 2024 will be one of the most historical years in gaming. Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 and Black Myth Wukong surprised many gamers, while leaks about the Switch 2 have kept Nintendo fans on the edge of their seats.

However, the end of an era was just witnessed by many avid fans of Nintendo and its services.

Nintendo officially closed the Nintendo Network in April, but X user @fishguy6564 has kept it alive. Seven months after the closure, they created an in-game loop on Mario Kart 7 and became the last player connected to the network.

On November 4, 2024, the Nintendo Network finally ended after X user @fishguy6564's Nintendo 3DS crashed, and the Mario Kart 7 session ended.

Nintendo was forced to keep the servers open for the past 7 months after the network was discontinued due to @fishguy6564's Mario Kart 7 session. Forcing the video game giant to keep their servers running for you is an impressive feat, considering their recent lawsuits versus Palworld.

Nintendo Network will go down in history and become part of many nostalgic gaming moments that gamers have gone through, like days of camping outside Gamestop during game releases in the 2000s. Or shouting Fus Ro Dah when Skyrim dropped, and 2016's Pokemon Go craze when everybody trespassed without a care.

We'll miss Nintendo Network and all the memories that came with it, but we are 100% sure that gaming will continue to evolve for years to come.

Although the Nintendo Network may have ended, Nintendo is still working to ensure that nostalgia is alive and well with its recent announcements of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition and the Nintendo Music App.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition will be released in March of next year, and the Nintendo Music App is already available in its serviced regions.
