One of Skyrim’s most popular ship-building mods has received a 2022 remaster

Modders have put a lot of effort into making sure Skyrim has continually evolved and expanded in the eleven years since it was first released into the world.

Some of these efforts have focused on revolutionising the game by adding massive new quests, huge mechanic overhauls, or surreal door-based trickery to it, while others enact changes simply designed to make the game look and sound as beautiful as possible.

If you’re not in the mood for the array of Christmas-themed goodies currently arriving in Tamriel, a new mod, which gives a popular work from 2016 a fresh coat of paint, might be worth adding to your load order.

Fancy heading on a Christmas cruise through Skyrim’s frigid waters?

The mod that does so is called ‘The Scarlett 4K - Cleaned Plugin and Upscaled Textures for A Buildable Ship’, and is the work of modder XilaMonstrr. A lot of their previous work has focused on adding extra texture options to popular mods, including our current mod of the month and a magic mod that narrowly missed out on making that list.

This time, they’ve decided to give retired modder Ld50365’s ‘The Scarlett - A Buildable Ship (SE)’, which, having been produced in 2016, was starting to show its age, a bit of much-needed TLC.

Their mod does so by upscaling and re-compressing a lot of the low resolution textures that made up the heavily customizable galleon, ensuring that your sea-faring Dragonborn won’t have to put up with their precious vessel looking less than impressive whenever it pulls into a new port.

Don’t worry if you’re running limited hardware either, as they’ve included a downscaled version of the mod which should run more effectively on older rigs or laptops.

The new mod also cleans up the plugin used to deploy the original mod, though there are seemingly a couple of lingering issues that XilaMonstrr is still working on fixing.

Naturally, if you want to take to the high seas and check out how these changes look, you’ll first need to grab Ld50365’s original mod.

Regardless of whether your Dragonborn is now earning the ire of their followers by insisting they be referred to as ‘Captain’, make sure to follow us for more updates on The Elder Scrolls 6 and the interesting world of Skyrim modding. You can also check out our mods of the month for December.
