Modders have put a lot of effort into making sure Skyrim has continually evolved and expanded in the eleven years since it was first released into the world.
Some of these efforts have focused on adding massive new quests and mechanic overhauls to the game, while others enact less showy changes simply designed to make things more immersive by allowing you to have your ear chewed off by a chatty carriage driver or watch a hunter’s campfire be put out by the rain.
Now, one modder has made an addition that might revolutionise any treasure hunter playthrough, giving you the chance to go on some interesting clue-fuelled chases throughout the province.
Desperate to earn some more hidden goodies as you explore Skyrim?
The mod that delivers this is called ‘Clue Scrolls in Skyrim’, and is the work of prolific modder AndrealphusVIII. A lot of their previous work has been focused on making minor tweaks to the game that can add a lot to it, such as allowing you to recruit Aventus Aretino to The Dark Brotherhood so he doesn’t have to live alone and ensuring that the Thalmor have dossiers on all of the game’s prominent characters.
This time, they’ve decided to solve their dissatisfaction with Skyrim’s vanilla puzzles by taking inspiration from Runescape’s treasure trails and adding a range of clue scrolls to the game’s levelled lists that’ll help lead you to hidden rewards.
These scrolls will show up randomly in loot chests throughout the game and come inscribed with a variety of riddles which you’ll need to solve to start following the trail of clues leading to the treasure.
From anagrams of characters’ names or cryptic descriptions of them to inspire you to talk to certain people, to instructions to dress a certain way, head to a certain location and perform a specific action, these clues should certainly lead to some interesting hijinks.
You might also receive an instruction in one of these notes to acquire a piece of Dwarven apparatus from Calcelmo in Markarth that’ll work a bit like a metal detector, telling you how hot or cold you are in terms of proximity to the treasure or the next clue.
If following these trails and trying to unearth your fortune sounds interesting to you, you’ll want to grab the Skyrim Script Extender assuming you don’t already have it, as it’s required to get your search for gold and gems underway.
Regardless of whether your Dragonborn is now trying to convince their drinking buddies to help them solve a riddle that’s tied their brain in knots, make sure to follow us for more updates on The Elder Scrolls 6 and the interesting world of Skyrim modding.
