For those who’ve invested thousands of hours into the likes of Skyrim and Fallout 4, the release of Starfield can’t come soon enough.
Regardless of how you feel about the prospects of Bethesda's venture into space, what you think its version of Earth might look like or whether you like what it looks like in Far Cry 5, the idea of being able to delve into a freshly curated game filled with new quests, characters, and locations has RPG lovers of all stripes intrigued.
Recently, some of the folks eagerly awaiting their invitation aboard an interstellar transport have been discussing what key or button previously assigned to activating Fallout’s VATS system and Skyrim’s shouts might control in the cosmos.
What kinds of special abilities do you think might be included in Starfield’s button mappings?
The thread containing their toggle-based talk on the Starfield subreddit began with a post from user frantruck, who kicked things off by asking: “Skyrim has shouts/powers, Fallout has VATS, what kind of ability(ies) do you want/expect Starfield to have in this space that is seemingly (now) vacant?”
Their fellow players chimed in with a range of different ideas for the idle input, with one of the most popular being Cyberpunk 2077-style cybernetic implants, with user Aggresion_factor putting forth the sales pitch: “Lose an arm? Don’t worry, (The) Freestar (Collective) has developed a mechanical arm guaranteed to shatter rocks or skulls.”
On the other hand, user KrimxonRath said: “I’m hoping if this is in the game that they cause cosmetic changes to the player character.”, while yungchow declared: “I don’t want this. (It) feels too much like Cyberpunk. I suppose I trust Bethesda to do it uniquely but I’d really rather something completely unique.”
Meanwhile, some users suggested the button could command something as simple as a scanning function, which user Infinitely_Infinity outlined could be: “upgradeable, be used on everything, show a lot of information and what’s interactable.”
Others had slightly more unorthodox ideas, such as user Anonymous_Pigeon, who said: “I think floating alien artefacts could give the player telekinetic abilities but (I don’t know) how likely that is or if I even want it.” and Supremetacoleader joking: “Perhaps ejecting your space waste from your suit has some effects. Poo Power +2 (means) nearby space predators will not attack you for a small duration.”
